So you say there’s no place to go in Cullowhee. There’s nothing to do. Well, Tom Hanks is armed with a new coffee shop and a fresh mentality on that particular subject. Cullowhee is ready for a change, and that change is starting with Tom’s Ugly Mug.
The Ugly Mug had its grand opening on March 1 with various espresso drinks, flavored coffee, and “regular coffee.” But that won’t be all the shop has to offer. Along with good conversation, you’ll find some very unique hand-crafted items at The Mug.
After trying a variety of jobs in the area, from working at a Highlands country club to weaving, Hanks fell upon glassblowing. Ten thousand beads later, he is known as The Local Glassblower who has traveled the country selling his wares. His glass will be on display and for sale at The Ugly Mug, along with a treasure trove of additional creations, courtesy of other local artisans.
The Ugly Mug will not be a traditional coffee shop. Mr. Hanks’ goal is to have local art (which is also for sale) rotating through the store, much like a gallery.
As you read this, The Ugly Mug’s walls display art by Joe Basset, a local painter whose work can also be seen at Spring Street Café.
But wait! There’s more. To subdue the wave of boredom that seems to encompass the student body of Western Carolina University, The Ugly Mug will be offering live music three days a week.
Tuesdays will feature an open acoustic jam, beginning at 7 p.m.; Wednesdays, The Mug will host drum circles from 7-9 p.m.; and Thursdays are jazz nights from 7-9 p.m.
With a comfortable down-to-earth atmosphere, lots to look at, and chillin’ space aplenty, The Ugly Mug, located next to Zoo Video in downtown Cullowhee, is the perfect place to go and hang out with your friends.
Asheville, Schmashville. There’s plenty to do in Cullowhee; all you have to do is look around. Just ask Tom.
