Cullowhee, N.C. – The Western Carolina University athletics department has announced that Caleb Bailey (cross country) and Christy Attebery (volleyball) have been named the Arby’s/Catamount Student-Athletes of the Month for September.
Bailey (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was named the Southern Conference Runner of the Week twice (9/12) and (10/2) for his performances in September. Bailey won two of the three meets he competed in the WCU Invitational and the Catamount Classic. His time of 26:14 in the WCU Invitational was a course record. The sophomore finished second in the Blue Ridge Open, only one second from first, with a time of 25:22. He additionally helped his team win the WCU Invitational and the Catamount Classic, while placing third at the Blue Ridge Open.
Attebery (Las Vegas, Nev.) was named to the all-tournament team at the Las Vegas Invitational (Sept. 7-8) and produced double-double efforts (kills/digs) in nine of the 14 matches played. Attebery broke the WCU career record for digs against Appalachian State (9/18). A senior, Attebery has led the team to an 8-6 overall record (5-1 in the SoCon) and a perfect 6-0 record at home. She is ranked fourth in the conference in digs per game (3.40) and sixth in kills per game (3.98).
Each month, Arby’s and WCU athletics will honor both a male and female student-athlete for representing the University in a positive manner.
