The WCU men’s rugby team has continued their winning ways this fall season. They head into this weekend’s state tournament with winning three straight, all against division opponents.
More impressively, the combined score for the three games was 83-5 in favor of the Catamounts. Furman, Elon, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have all suffered convincing defeats at the hands of the Cats.
The team has benefited from the addition of an athletic recruiting class that has added depth and promise of a strong future for the team. They join several solid veteran players including All-American Edwin Rios.
Sophomore Lucas Bicknell has been a bruising force, while senior Mike Williams has taken a leadership role as the team’s flyhalf. The team has intimidated most opponents with its physical running game and defense-oriented game plan.
Western figures to face its most difficult competition this weekend at the state tournament. The University of North Carolina and Appalachian State will enter the tournament as the favorites, but Western’s recent momentum will make them a force to be reckoned with.
Next weekend, the squad will return home on Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. at the lower track field.
