Western Carolina to Host ‘Football 101 for Women’

Western Carolina Athletics will hold the second annual “Football 101 for Women” in preparation for the 2009 college football season. Hosted by Cyndi Wagner and Gale Smith, the wives of head football coach Dennis Wagner and WCU Athletic Director Chip Smith, women are invited to join them for a night of football, wine, food and fun.

The clinic, presented by the Biltmore Winery and the WCU Athletics department, will take place on Thursday, August 6 from 5:00-9:00 pm, on-campus at E.J. Whitmire Stadium and the Ramsey Center.

For women, it is a great chance to increase overall football knowledge, mingle with Catamount coaches and players, learn some wine and tailgate pairings and to have a great time.

The event is intended to provide a comfortable setting for women to learn about Catamount Football and get to know the coaches, wives and team in a fun way. Clinic activities begin with wine, from the Biltmore Winery and appetizers from local restaurants with a tailgate theme.

During this time the WCU coaches will be mingling with the guests and experts from the Biltmore Winery – including Sharon Fenchak, Biltmore’s winemaker (and fellow football fan) – assisting the participants in selecting the perfect wines for their tailgate fares and a game day apparel fashion show will take place. The instruction follows with a film and chalkboard session then it is off to the field for some drills and skills.

Registration for the fun-filled evening is limited. The cost is $25 in advance of Monday, Aug. 3. Registration after Aug. 3 (if available) is $35. Both include an official Football 101 T-shirt, happy hour, tailgate themed hors d’oeuvres, prizes and more. Attire for the evening should be active wear for participation in the on-field activities.
