Western Carolina University will offer the workshop “Learning for Fun: Stained Glass” from 6 to 9 pm on Thursdays, Aug. 27 through Oct. 1, in the south lobby of Cordelia Camp Building.
Appropriate for both beginners and advanced students, the course will follow the Tiffany Method of stained glass, which involves wrapping in copper foil and then soldering each piece of glass. Participants will complete a project in plain glass and a small panel in colored glass by the end of the workshop.
Participants will learn safety procedures, proper cutting techniques, foiling and soldering techniques, and simple metal framing, as well as types of glass, solders and copper foils.
Instructor Moya O’Neal has worked with stained glass for more than 20 years. She has been an active member of the International Guild of Glass Artists and teaches privately in her spare time.
Cost of the workshop is $85. Students also will be expected to purchase their solder, foil, glass, safety glasses and cotton gloves. Other tools will be provided.

WCU will also offer a course on buying and selling on eBay from 6 to 9pm on Thursday, Sept. 10, in Room 143 of the Cordelia Camp Building.
Instructor George Ford, an assistant professor of construction management at WCU, will walk participants through the process of taking and downloading pictures, posting auctions, packing and shipping sold items, dealing with customers and more.
“Dr. Ford taught this popular course when living in Greenville, S.C., and his classes often had a waiting list,” said Susan Fouts, director of continuing education at WCU. “It is important that individuals learn to use this marketplace in a safe and profitable way.”
The cost of the course is $49. Space is limited and preregistration is required.

In addition, all through the fall semester, Western Carolina will offer an aqua fitness class Aug. 31 through Dec.10.
Participants will engage in a variety of aqua exercises designed to increase cardiovascular endurance. The class will be held 5:30 to 6:15pm Mondays through Thursdays in the Reid Gym pool on campus.
“Water aerobics allow a person to exercise every muscle and every joint in the body all at the same time,” said Fouts. “The most important benefit of water aerobics is that almost anyone, no matter their age, can participate in water aerobics. The water causes your body to be buoyant, which causes less strain and stress on your joints and muscles.”
Pre-registration is encouraged. On-site registration will be held at the pool before the class meeting on Aug. 31. After that date, participants must register online or at the Division of Educational Outreach, 138 Camp Building, during regular business hours. Cost of the class is $55.
