Sex Signals: What Signals Do You Send?

Welcome to college! Your first year here at Western will undoubtedly be the first time you’ve done lots of things without your parents or teachers breathing down your back. You’ve finally broken free of the parental system, you have a 24/7 social environment provided by the dorms, and freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want. And of course, dating is now at a whole new level. Let’s face it, dating and hooking up is a different ball game once you leave the comfortable confines of your high school back home. Sex Signal responds to the challenge. Sex Signals is a program about dating and hooking up and it is coming to Western Tuesday, September 12. Sex Signals takes on issues such as hooking up and dating in a lighthearted, comical manner that will engage students as they discuss sex, dating, and of course the serious issue of sexual assault. The 75-minute, two-person play begins with an irreverent and funny look at the awkwardness of dating, with each actor representing their gender’s perspective. Through a no-holds-barred approach, the show explores how social pressures, gender role stereotypes, and unrealistic fantasies can make social interaction a challenge. Worse still, these factors enable some to view date rape as simple seduction, and for victims of date rape to blame themselves for their own vulnerability. Although the message is a serious one, the show uses humor, engaging audiences in candid discussions about their beliefs and experiences. Seasoned educators and facilitators, the presenters strike a balance between laughing about the differences between men and women, and clearly communicating some serious messages about how we all should treat each otherIf you’re looking around for something different and entertaining to go to and “yikes,” maybe even learn something new, come check out the program at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 12 in the UC Grand Room. Your professor may even give you extra credit for attending-just ask!
