The Third Policeman is Flann O’Brien’s story of a man who commits murder. Slowly, after the murder, his everyday surroundings begin to twist into a strange mockery of normality. Bit by bit strange things occur and the story goes further down the rabbit hole. The Third Policeman has a strange plot, akin to other stories like the television show LOST or Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The writing takes a while to get used to since the language uses archaic words and outdated slang, but the bizarre turn of events in the story is enough to keep your attention. Things just get curiouser and curiouser as the book charges forward, and only at the very last page is everything finally revealed. If you happen to like macabre and mysterious stories, try picking up The Third Policeman.
