The first annual Western Carolinian NCAA Bracket contest concluded Monday as Kansas beat Memphis in the National Championship game. Jonathan Hubler is the winner of the contest, having picked three of four final four teams and Kansas as the National Championship.
A lot of picking a bracket has to do with a stout devotion to the ESPN self-made science of ‘Bracketology’. In picking a bracket, one has to look extensively at match ups, weigh rankings, and call some upsets to be successful.
“I went a lot off of what the analysts were saying,” said Hubler, “but once the tournament going, I really liked Chalmers, Rush, and Sasha Kaun. I was happy with my pick early on.”
Hubler is a Senior Business Law major at WCU, with plans to attend law school after graduation. Hubler is the founder of the student support group ‘Hunter’s Hooligans’: the rowdy fans that sit in the courtside corner for men’s basketball.
As to next year, Hubler feels he can repeat this year’s success with a surprise pick all the way to the elite eight.
“I’ve already begun my bracket for next year and a tournament wouldn’t be NCAA tournament without a SoCon team in the elite eight, so I’m already picking Western Carolina elite eight, 2009”
